About Xuanwu Lake

Xuanwu Lake is Nanjing's most beloved urban oasis. Covering 4.72 square kilometers in the heart of the city, this historic lake has been a scenic destination for over 1,500 years. The lake is divided into five distinct islands by bridges and causeways, each with its own character and attractions.

The lake is surrounded on three sides by the Ming City Wall and on the fourth by skyscrapers, creating a striking contrast between ancient and modern Nanjing. The five islands - Huan Isle, Ying Isle, Liang Isle, Cui Isle, and Ling Isle - are connected by bridges and offer gardens, pavilions, and walking paths.

Xuanwu Lake is famous for its seasonal beauty: cherry blossoms in spring, lotus flowers in summer, chrysanthemums in autumn, and snow-covered pavilions in winter. The lake has been celebrated in poetry and painting throughout Chinese history.

The park is free to enter and popular with locals for morning exercises, tai chi, and leisurely walks. Paddle boats and electric boats are available for rent to explore the lake from the water.

The Honest Truth

What I tell my friends

Xuanwu Lake is my go-to spot when I need a break from the city. It is free, beautiful, and surprisingly peaceful for being in the city center. But let me be real: the five islands are not that different from each other. After the second island, you have kind of seen it all. The paddle boats are fun but overpriced. I come here for morning runs and sunset walks, not as a must-see attraction.

The Downsides (Nobody Talks About)

  • The islands are similar — after visiting 2-3, the novelty wears off
  • Paddle boat rentals are overpriced (~80 RMB / $11 per hour)
  • The lake can smell unpleasant in summer due to algae
  • Weekend crowds are intense — locals picnic and play music everywhere
  • The 'bird watching' is overstated — you will see sparrows and ducks, nothing exotic
Bottom line

Absolutely, especially because it is free. It is a great place to unwind, not a world-class attraction. Come for a morning walk or sunset stroll. Skip the paddle boats and just enjoy the free scenery.
