About Jiming Temple

Jiming Temple (Jiming Si) is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Nanjing, with a history dating back over 1,500 years to the Liang Dynasty (502-557 AD). The temple is particularly famous for its location at the foot of Purple Mountain, where the ancient city wall creates a dramatic backdrop.

The temple complex follows traditional Chinese Buddhist architecture, with halls arranged along a central axis ascending the hillside. The main structures include the Shanmen Gate, Tianwang Hall, Guanyin Hall, and the towering seven-story Medicine Buddha Pagoda, which offers panoramic views over Xuanwu Lake and the city.

Jiming Temple is especially popular in spring when the cherry blossom-lined road leading to the temple bursts into pink bloom. The contrast between the ancient temple, the Ming City Wall winding up the mountain, and the modern cityscape creates one of Nanjing's most photographed scenes.

The temple is an active place of worship, with monks conducting daily ceremonies. Visitors can participate in meditation sessions, vegetarian dining, and traditional Buddhist practices. The temple's vegetarian restaurant is renowned throughout Nanjing.
