About Qinhuai River

The Qinhuai River is the lifeblood of Nanjing's historic heart, flowing through the city for over 100 kilometers and earning the nickname 'Mother River of Nanjing.' The section through the Confucius Temple district is the most scenic and historically significant, having been the center of culture, commerce, and entertainment for over 1,000 years.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the riverbanks were lined with teahouses, restaurants, brothels, and the residences of wealthy merchants. The famous Qinhuai Eight Beauties - legendary courtesans celebrated for their talent and beauty - lived along these banks. Today, the area preserves this romantic heritage while serving as Nanjing's premier entertainment district.

Evening boat rides are the quintessential Qinhuai experience. Traditional-style boats glide along the illuminated river, passing under ancient stone bridges and alongside white-walled, black-tiled buildings adorned with thousands of red lanterns. The reflections in the water create a magical atmosphere that transports visitors to ancient China.

The river is also the setting for the annual Lantern Festival, when elaborate lantern displays line the banks and float on the water, drawing millions of visitors. Throughout the year, the riverside promenade is perfect for evening strolls, people-watching, and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.
