Laomendong Historic District
A charmingly restored historic neighborhood showcasing traditional Nanjing architecture, crafts, and street food.

About Laomendong Historic District
Laomendong (Old East Gate) is a historic district that offers an authentic glimpse into old Nanjing. Unlike the more commercialized Confucius Temple area, Laomendong retains a more traditional atmosphere with its narrow alleys, courtyard houses, and local shops selling traditional crafts and snacks.
The district dates back to the Ming Dynasty when it was a thriving residential and commercial area just inside the city wall. After years of neglect, the area was carefully restored starting in the early 2000s, preserving the original street layout and architectural features while adding modern amenities.
Today, Laomendong is a maze of narrow lanes lined with traditional brick and wood buildings. The area is known for its traditional Nanjing crafts, including clay figurines, paper cutting, and bamboo weaving. Numerous small restaurants and street food vendors serve authentic local specialties that are popular with both locals and tourists.
The district connects to the city wall near Zhonghua Gate, and the elevated walkway along the wall offers great views over the traditional rooftops. In the evening, the area is illuminated with traditional red lanterns, creating a charming atmosphere without the overwhelming crowds of the Confucius Temple district.
