The Purple Mountain (Zijin Shan)
A majestic mountain on the eastern side of Nanjing, home to imperial tombs, temples, and beautiful natural scenery.

About The Purple Mountain (Zijin Shan)
Purple Mountain, or Zijin Shan, is the crown jewel of Nanjing's natural and historical landscape. Rising 448 meters above sea level, this UNESCO World Heritage site encompasses over 30 square kilometers of forests, ancient monuments, and cultural treasures. The mountain gets its name from the purple-hued clouds that often shroud its peaks at sunset.
The mountain complex contains three major UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, and the Ming Dynasty imperial tombs. It also houses the beautiful Meiling Palace, Linggu Temple, and numerous hiking trails through ancient forests.
Visitors can easily spend an entire day exploring the mountain's many attractions. The area is particularly stunning in spring when plum blossoms carpet the hillsides, and in autumn when the ginkgo and maple trees turn brilliant gold and red.
The Honest Truth
Purple Mountain is beautiful, but it is also exhausting. The sites are spread out over a huge area, and you will walk a lot. The cable car is helpful but does not connect everything. If you try to see everything in one day, you will be tired and rushed. My advice: pick 2-3 sites and enjoy them properly rather than checking boxes.
The Downsides (Nobody Talks About)
- The attractions are very spread out — expect 15-30 minutes of walking between sites
- Food options on the mountain are limited and overpriced — bring snacks
- Weekends and holidays are packed with domestic tourists — go on a weekday if possible
- The sightseeing bus is useful but queues can be long during peak times
- Some areas have steep stairs that are tough in summer heat
Absolutely worth it, but plan for a full day and wear good walking shoes. The Sacred Way alone is worth the trip. Skip the observatory if you are short on time — it is the least impressive site.
