About Nanjing Botanical Garden

The Nanjing Botanical Garden (Zhongshan Botanical Garden) is a peaceful oasis located on the western slopes of Purple Mountain. Founded in 1929, it is one of China's oldest botanical gardens and houses over 3,000 species of plants in beautifully landscaped settings.

The garden is divided into two main sections: the North Garden focuses on medicinal plants and features a traditional Chinese medicine garden, while the South Garden specializes in ornamental plants and includes a magnificent arboretum. Together they cover over 186 hectares of Purple Mountain's foothills.

Highlights include the Ginkgo Avenue, which turns brilliant gold in autumn; the Maple Garden with over 20 species of maple trees; the Rose Garden blooming from May to October; and the Tropical Plant House with exotic species from around the world. The garden also preserves many rare and endangered native Chinese plants.

The garden's location on Purple Mountain means it's cooler than the city below, making it a refreshing summer retreat. The many walking paths, pavilions, and scenic viewpoints make it popular with locals for morning walks, photography, and nature appreciation. Spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage are particularly spectacular.
