Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum
The final resting place of Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang, founder of the Ming Dynasty, and a masterpiece of imperial architecture.

About Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum
Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum is the tomb of Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang (Hongwu Emperor), the founder of the Ming Dynasty, and his empress Ma. Built between 1381 and 1405, it is one of the largest imperial tombs in China and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2003.
The mausoleum follows traditional Chinese feng shui principles, situated at the southern foot of Purple Mountain with a river flowing in front. The approach to the tomb, known as the Sacred Way (Shendao), is lined with stone statues of animals and officials - one of the best preserved in China.
The complex covers over 1,700 hectares and includes the Great Golden Gate, the Stele Pavilion, the Lingxing Gate, and the Treasure City where the emperor is buried. The Ming Tower (Minglou) offers panoramic views of the surrounding area.
The Sacred Way is particularly famous for its 12 pairs of stone animals (lions, xiezhi, camels, elephants, qilin, and horses) and 4 pairs of stone officials, all carved from single blocks of stone in the early 15th century.
The Honest Truth
This is the most impressive historical site in Nanjing, no question. The Sacred Way is genuinely breathtaking, especially in autumn when the ginkgo trees turn gold. But here is what guidebooks do not tell you: the main tomb area itself is somewhat anticlimactic — just a mound behind a wall. The real magic is the approach.
The Downsides (Nobody Talks About)
- The actual burial mound is underwhelming — just a grassy hill behind a wall
- Ticket price has increased significantly in recent years (now ~70 RMB / $10)
- The Stele Pavilion is closed for renovation more often than not
- Audio guide quality is mediocre — better to read up beforehand
- Vendors near the entrance are pushy and overcharge for drinks
100% worth it. The Sacred Way is one of the most beautiful walks in China. Spend your time there and do not rush. The tomb itself is a 10-minute visit — the approach is where the magic happens.
