Meiling Palace
An elegant Art Deco villa built for Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling, offering a glimpse into Republican-era luxury.

About Meiling Palace
Meiling Palace (Meiling Gong) is an elegant villa built in 1931 as a residence for Chiang Kai-shek and his wife Soong Mei-ling. Located on the southern slope of Purple Mountain, the palace combines traditional Chinese architectural elements with Western Art Deco style, reflecting the cosmopolitan tastes of China's Republican-era elite.
The three-story building features a distinctive green-tiled roof designed to resemble a phoenix when viewed from above - a tribute to Soong Mei-ling (whose name means 'beautiful spirit'). The interior has been preserved with original furniture, decorations, and personal items belonging to the couple.
The main floor includes a grand reception hall, dining room, and study, while the upper floors contain private bedrooms and Soong Mei-ling's private chapel. The basement housed kitchens, staff quarters, and a bunker for air raids. The surrounding gardens feature beautiful landscaping with imported plants and a scenic overlook.
Today, Meiling Palace offers a fascinating glimpse into the lifestyle of China's Republican-era leadership. The exhibitions include photographs, documents, and personal effects that tell the story of this influential couple and their role in modern Chinese history.
