Linggu Temple
A serene Buddhist temple on Purple Mountain featuring China's only beamless hall and a towering pagoda.

About Linggu Temple
Linggu Temple (Linggu Si), or 'Soul Valley Temple,' is a historic Buddhist temple located in the eastern foothills of Purple Mountain. Originally built in 515 AD during the Liang Dynasty, the temple has been rebuilt several times and retains a peaceful atmosphere away from the more crowded attractions on the mountain.
The temple's most remarkable feature is the Beamless Hall (Wuliang Dian), built entirely of brick and stone without a single wooden beam. Constructed in 1381, this unique structure was originally part of a Buddhist temple and later served as a memorial hall. The hall's arched brick construction is an architectural marvel that has survived for over 600 years.
Behind the temple stands the Linggu Pagoda, a nine-story structure built in 1929 to commemorate soldiers who died during the Northern Expedition. The pagoda offers excellent views over the surrounding forest and is a popular spot for photography. The climb to the top involves narrow stairs but rewards visitors with panoramic vistas.
The temple grounds include beautiful gardens, ancient gingko trees, and the Three Superb Stele, which combines the calligraphy of three famous Tang Dynasty masters. The peaceful forest setting makes Linggu Temple a refreshing retreat from the busier sites on Purple Mountain.
