About Jiangnan Examination Hall

The Jiangnan Examination Hall (Jiangnan Gongyuan) was the largest and most prestigious imperial examination hall in Chinese history. Located in the Confucius Temple district, this complex was where scholars from across the Jiangnan region came to take the grueling civil service examinations that determined their careers and social status.

Established in 1168 during the Southern Song Dynasty, the hall reached its peak during the Ming and Qing dynasties when it could accommodate over 20,000 candidates simultaneously. The examinations lasted for days, with candidates confined to tiny individual cells where they ate, slept, and wrote their essays.

The museum today occupies a portion of the original complex and provides fascinating insights into China's examination culture. Exhibits include replicas of the examination cells, original examination papers with perfect calligraphy, grading systems, and stories of famous scholars who passed or failed.

The museum also explores the broader social impact of the examination system, which was the primary path to social mobility in imperial China for over 1,300 years. Interactive exhibits allow visitors to try sample examination questions and experience the conditions candidates endured.
