Nanjing Yunjin Museum
Dedicated to Nanjing Yunjin (Cloud Brocade), a UNESCO-listed traditional silk weaving art with 1,600 years of history.

About Nanjing Yunjin Museum
The Nanjing Yunjin Museum is dedicated to preserving and showcasing Yunjin (Cloud Brocade), one of China's most exquisite traditional silk weaving arts. This UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage dates back over 1,600 years and was once reserved exclusively for imperial use.
The museum is located near the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall and occupies a modern building designed to evoke the patterns and textures of brocade fabric. Inside, visitors can learn about the entire process of Yunjin production, from silk cultivation to the complex weaving techniques that create these luxurious textiles.
The highlight is watching master weavers at work on traditional looms. Yunjin is woven using a unique technique where the weaver sits above the warp threads and the pattern drawer sits below, communicating through a system of cords and signals. This 'large flower floor loom' technique is one of the most complex hand-weaving methods in the world.
The museum's collection includes imperial robes from the Ming and Qing dynasties, Buddhist ceremonial textiles, and modern Yunjin artworks. The intricate patterns often feature dragons, phoenixes, clouds, and flowers in gold, silver, and vibrant silk threads. Some pieces took years to complete and used gold thread as thin as a human hair.
